I shut down my first company after four years
by accademy · July 13, 2026
What happened? I spent four years building a small SaaS for independent bookshops. We never passed 40 paying customers. In March I finally shut it down.
What did it cost me? Most of my savings, a relationship that didn't survive the stress, and a version of myself that believed effort alone was enough.
Where am I now? Working a normal job again. It felt like defeat for the first months. Now it mostly feels like rest. I still open my old admin dashboard sometimes, out of habit.
What would I tell someone going through the same thing? Closing something is a skill nobody teaches you. Doing it cleanly — paying what you owe, telling your customers the truth — is the part you'll be proud of later.
